Fair Food II

We hit the Indiana State Fair today, because it was State Employee free day! It was HELLA hot at the fair and temperatures were in the upper 90s. TJ had also been out in the field all day this afternoon so he wasn't too happy about being in more direct sunlight at the fair. We spent about 2 hours at the fair and then decided our tummys were full and that it was probably time to get some sleep since I have more wonderful overtime to work tomorrow!

Here is a list of the things we ate and their ratings.

FIRST CONTENDER: Ribbon Fries
Definition: Thinly cut fries that are swirly and connected in long strands.
Cost: $6.50
Deliciousness: 9

This was TJ's favorite fair food this trip. He liked the the fries weren't crispy like chips but a good combo of chew and crisp. I thought they needed salt like CRAZY. They were good, but definitely not my favorite.

SECOND CONTENDER: DONUT BURGER
Definition: A freakin' hamburger anyway you want it thrown inbetween 2 Krispy Kremes
Cost: $6.50
Deliciousness: 8.5

This odd delicacy was chosen on a whim. It actually wasn't bad at all. You can see that I opted for red onion as well. It kind of tasted like eating a burger on sweet yeast rolls. I liked how they serve the whole thing in a Krispy Kreme HAT! How bad ass is that? They were also topping these babies with BACON and CHEESE. We thought, being beginners and all, that we'd stick with plain.

THIRD CONTENDER: Corn Dog
Definition: Hot dog on a stick dipped in corn batter then deep fried.
Cost: $3.00
Deliciousness: 7

I'm not much of a corn dog person so this was all TJ. He claimed that corn dogs are fair food, but I think of them more as school cafeteria food. It was small for $3.00 but it was also are only dish with meat.

FOURTH CONTENDER: Dippin' Dots
Definition: Liquid Hydrogen frozen Ice Cream
Cost: $5.00
Deliciousness: 9

I love Dippin' Dots and this was TJ's first experience with them. He really like the texture of the dots. I think this was the best value of the day. I remember getting Dippin' Dots like 10 years ago (has it really been that long?!) at the Santa Cruz beach boardwalk and then they were like $5.00 for a little saucer of Dippin' Dots. This was a full on cup of dots! It was rad, super tasty!

FIFTH CONTENDER: Corn Dipped In Butter
Definition: Corn Dipped In Butter
Cost: $3.00
Deliciousness: 4

The corn was kind of a disappointment. The corn wasn't very sweet and it didn't taste like there was much butter on the corn. I probably should have added more salt but knowing TJ and his salt phobia I opted not to. At $3.00 it wasn't a huge loss but from what I hear the corn is supposed to be like one of the greatest things you can get at the fair....this was not so. Bummer.

SIXTH CONTENDER: Elephant Ear
Definition: Deep fried dough with butter and cinnamon sugar sprinkled on top.
Cost: $4.50
Deliciousness: 7

This years elephant ears weren't as good as last years. They lacked cinnamon. This was the last thing we ate and we made the mistake of buying two instead of one like last year. TJ insisted we get our own since I liked it so much the last time. It was good just not great.

TJ's BIG Bonus

Tj received a very special award from work two weeks ago commending him on his trainings in the field. Along with award came a surprising cash bonus which went straight to the bank.

Last week I was informed that I will have to start putting in numerous hours of overtime to help compensate while the dept is hiring more people. The past 2 weeks have been tough because I've been consistently leaving work late....really late. And my departure from work affects one other more than even myself...TJ. Although he's been straining through the long wait times hearing that I'd be working more late nights and additional days nearly floored him.

We then started up our car search yet again. This time more determined then ever to find the perfect car at the right price. I did my research first and gave TJ my two plausible favorites based on their financing options: the Nissan Rouge and the Mazda Cx-7.

It was a hard sell but I convinced TJ to go look at those two cars on Friday night to get an idea of what he liked and what he didn't like since this would be his primary vehicle. He made me promise that we wouldn't test drive anything or wheel and deal, we were only Going to "look." We went to Nissan with car salesman skepticism in mind and looked at the Rouge. As we perused the lot a black Rouge beamed toward Tj. His eyes brightened as a salesman neared. We asked to see inside and TJ was amazed. We then went inside to talk numbers when TJ said 'maybe I wanna test drive it.'. This coming from the person who almost refused to go to the dealership all together was astonishing. He did in fact test drove the Rouge and was soon fused to it. We later crunched the numbers and said we'd be back to look at it again.

The next morning TJ woke up in a panic "what if someone bought my car?!". And got ready to leave the house as fast as he could. "what if someone else drove it?!". The end of the world would have neared! We went to Starbucks (my evil doing) and got breakfast then went to the dealership.

There he saw his mighty black crossover and was ready to sign on the dotted line. We went through the painful process of signing and initialing and then the keys were his! He looks so happy!

RIBS

The Nichols-Warrner rib fest 2010 was ON today! I made some bad ass ribs! Target had a bunch of raw ribs on sale and I made some magic and turned them into yum. All it took was some rib rub and brown sugar on the ribs and 3 hours in the oven! After the 3 hours in the oven TJ and I slathered them with BBQ sauce and we grilled them out on the charcoal grill. They were AWESOME!
